Grasshopper Dissection
Identify the head, thorax, and abdomen, then open the body wall carefully to examine internal organs. Complete the pre-lab and write-up.

In This Lab You Will
Identify a grasshopper as an insect with a head, thorax, and abdomen.
Examine external structures, including the pronotum, legs, wings, tympanum, and spiracles.
Determine sex using the posterior abdomen.
Open the body wall carefully and locate the gastric caeca as the internal landmark.
Identify major internal organs and connect each structure to its function.
Complete the pre-lab and labeled drawings on the write-up.
Materials
Preserved grasshopper; dissecting tray; fine dissecting scissors; blunt probe; forceps; dissecting pins if directed; hand lens or dissecting microscope; gloves; eye protection; colored pencils; paper towels.
Safety
Wear gloves and eye protection. Keep hands away from your face while working.
Lift the exoskeleton gently before advancing the scissors. Use a blunt probe to separate attached tissue.
Keep the specimen in its tray. Report splashes, cuts, or damaged equipment immediately.
Dispose of the specimen and preservative as directed. Wash your hands after removing gloves.
